SWITZERLAND PROMOTES FEAR AND BIGITRY | Harris Zafar

The rising level of intolerance in Europe is a source of concern not just for Muslims but for mankind as a whole. Europe is rapidly degenerating in to a land of fear, segregation and small-mindedness.

Sunday introduced another chapter in a growing trend of fear and intolerance in Europe. Switzerland – a country previously renown for tolerance and public order – has passed a new constitutional ban on the construction of minarets, a traditional architectural feature of Muslim Mosques around the world.

Minarets – very similar to spires found in Christian churches around the world – have never been used for political force or coercion. In societies where Muslims are in the minority, it is not even used to announce the Islamic call to prayer. A benign feature of Islamic architecture, the minaret will no longer be allowed in new mosque constructions, even though the spires found in churches will continue to be allowed.

The rising level of intolerance in Europe is a source of concern not just for Muslims but for mankind as a whole. Europe is rapidly degenerating in to a land of fear, segregation and small-mindedness.

SWITZERLAND BANS BUILDING OF MINARETS | Qasim Rashid

It seems the very ban designed to limit Islam's influence, is already having the very opposite effect.

In a surprising outcome, 57.5% of Swiss voters approved a ban of all future minarets in Switzerland.  Walter Wobmann, president of the committee, stands by his 'Yes for a ban of Minarets,' poster that has been plastered throughout the country.  The poster depicts a burqa clad woman standing in front of numerous minarets in the guise of missiles coming up from the Swiss flag.

Many question this decision, arguing that it is in direct violation of the UN's International Charter of Human Rights, of which Switzerland is a member, that guarantees religious freedom for the citizens of Switzerland.  Proponents of the ban argue that, "The minaret is a sign of political power and demand, comparable with whole-body covering by the burqa, tolerance of forced marriage and genital mutilation of girls."

Factually speaking, the minaret serves only as a high platform for the Adhaan or the Call to Prayer.  It has no relevance theologically, unlike the Cross atop a church steeple.  In fact, Mosques in Switzerland no longer even utilize the minaret for the call to prayer.  Today, the minaret serves only as a piece of beautiful architecture, and certainly not a 'sign of political power comparable with forced marriage and genital mutilations.'  Such concepts have no place in Islam.

A reply received from a Swiss Muslim who attends Masjid Mahmud in Zurich stated, "Although this result is unfortunate, we are already seeing the positive side of this trial: In the last few months we have had more Swiss people and media coverage, than we had in the years before. And hopefully this will continue."

It seems the very ban designed to limit Islam's influence, is already having the very opposite effect.  Muslims comprise of roughly 6% of Switzerland's 7.5 million citizens.  The 4 minarets currently in existence will not be torn down.

THE WORLD REACTS: SWISS MINARET BAN SENDS RIPPLES WORLDWIDE

The Vatican told the BBC on Monday that it endorsed a statement by the conference of Swiss Bishops criticizing the vote for heightening "the problems of cohabitation between religions and cultures".

Swiss voters' decision to ban the construction of minarets has drawn worldwide criticism, with the United Nations and Council of Europe expressing outright concern.

UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Asma Jahangir, criticised the "clear discrimination towards the members of the Swiss Muslim community", in a statement on Monday.
"I have serious concerns about the negative consequences of the outcome of this vote on the freedom of religion or belief of members of the Swiss Muslim community," she said, and called for Switzerland to take the necessary measures to protect the freedom of religion.

Meanwhile a spokesman for the UN High Commission for Human Rights also confirmed on Monday that legal experts were assessing whether the ban conformed to international law. The Commission will give its position on the outcome once the legal assessment is complete.

The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly said the Swiss referendum outcome risked "promoting feelings of exclusion and deepening divisions" in society.

"The decision, although an expression of popular opinion, is a source of serious concern," said LluĂs Maria de Puig, president of the assembly, in a statement.

OUTRAGE ON SWISS MINARET VOTE, BUT HOW DO MUSLIM STATES HANDLE CHURCHES? | The Christian Science Monitor

The Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has already condemned the Swiss action, stating that minarets are far from political symbols.  "It is of surprise and concern that the issue of banning minarets has raised itself so strongly in a country like Switzerland, which has always had a reputation for peace, tolerance and a lack of prejudice." Swiss minaret vote leads to Muslim anger, but the Swiss aren't alone in restricting religious freedom.

Muslim reaction across the world to Sunday’s Swiss referendum banning the construction of further minarets for mosques in the tiny Alpine nation has been almost entirely negative.

Indonesia’s Maskuri Abdillah, leader of the largest Muslim organization in the world’s most populous Muslim nation said the vote reflected Swiss “hatred” of Islam and Muslims.

Egyptian Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, close to the regime of President Hosni Mubarak, said the ban was an attempt to “insult the feelings of the Muslim community in and outside Switzerland.”

Yet the referendums outcome pales in comparison to restrictions on non-Muslims who aim to practice their faith in Muslim lands. In fact, the vote only brought Swiss legal practice closer to that of many majority Muslim states that also place limits on the construction of houses of worship.

MUMBAI'S WINNERS AND LOSERS | Dawn.com

The militants’ victory is not restricted to poisoning bilateral relations between India and Pakistan: by hitting Mumbai, it has ensured that there will be no cooperation between the two countries in the war against extremism in the foreseeable future.

AS I write this, it is one year to the day since the terrorist atrocity in Mumbai. I watched the city’s three-day ordeal with fascination and horror in Sri Lanka on various news channels.

A year later, perhaps we can look back on the attack with a greater degree of objectivity, and count the winners and the losers.

The real winners, of course, are militant groups, like the Lashkar-i-Taiba, and their shadowy backers in Pakistan. They have achieved what they set out to do: sabotage the peace talks between India and Pakistan. Although these negotiations had not achieved a breakthrough, they had greatly improved relations between India and Pakistan.

The second prize goes to the security establishments in both countries, although this is truer of Pakistan than it is of India where the military is firmly under civilian control. The reality is that soldiers and spies need enemies to justify their lavish budgets. Peace between traditional enemies means cuts in defence, and less toys for the boys.

Eid-ul-adha, also called "the festival of sacrifice," is a religious festival to commemorate Hadrat Ibrahim's [Prophet Abraham] willingness to sacrifice his son, Hadrat Ismael, for Allah.

Celebrated on the 10th of Dhil-Hijjah, the last month of the Muslim calendar, Eid-ul Adha marks the end of the Hajj ceremony, or pilgrimage to the Kaaba. This is the day after the pilgrims in Hajj descend from Mount Arafat. The Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to Mecca observed by Muslims worldwide.

This year, Muslims celebrated Eid-ul Adha on Friday. There are about 800,000 Muslims in Canada, with an estimated 45,000 in the Edmonton region.

A distinct part of this festival is the sacrificing of an animal for those who can afford to do so. The animals should be free from physical defects and fully grown. The person who offers the sacrifice is allowed to use a portion of the meat; the remainder is distributed among relatives, friends, neighbours and the poor. The animal skins are sold and the proceeds given to various charities. Eid funds are also collected and spent to help others.--//--

REV. PAT ROBERTSON - CHRISTIAN OR EXTREMIST? | Examiner.com

Pat Robertson may intend to represent Christianity, but I'm not sure how that's possible. I must have missed the verse in the Holy Bible where Jesus commands his disciples to spread hatred and fear.

Yes, I agree, the title of this article is quite alarming.  However it is designed to prove a point.  After the tragedy at Fort Hood, Pat Robertson asserted that Islam is "not a religion" but a "violent political system." He then added that those who practice it should be treated like members of a communist or fascist party.

I wont respond to such an obtuse statement as to run the risk of dignifying his hate speech.  However, I will make one truth clear.  Pat Robertson, who claims to be Christian, promotes an attitude against Islam that mimics the same attitude that extremists, who claim to be Muslim, promote against the West.  Therefore, we must ask; does this make Robertson a truer Christian or a truer extremist?  I'll let you decide that one.

The fact is, no competent Muslim seeks to justify the actions of Major Hasan at Fort Hood.  Likewise, no competent Christian seeks to justify the actions of Timothy McVeigh at Oklahoma City.  Why, then, even tolerate such hate speech?  Does America gain some advantage by endorsing or appreciating the commentes spewed by Pat Robertson?  Does it make our society richer and our children better citizens?

Rather than spread suspicion and discord, those in religious authority in our nation owe a duty to build bridges of mutual brotherhood.  Instead of stereotyping an entire religion for the actions of one, leaders of different faiths should further strengthen their ties and stand united against all forms of terrorism, no matter the religion to which the perpetrator claims adherence.

Pat Robertson may intend to represent Christianity, but I'm not sure how that's possible.  I must have missed the verse in the Holy Bible where Jesus (peace be upon him) commands his disciples to spread hatred and fear.

SAUDI ARABIA TO ITS WOMEN: DROP DEAD | Examiner.com

Under Saudi Arabia's strict (and incorrect) interpretation of Islamic Sharia law, women face severe discrimination, particularly in matters like education, employment and the justice system.

Ahmadiyya Times | Articles | Harris Zafar
Portland Muslim Examinar | Re-Print
Publish date: October 13, 2009

Attention all Saudi women: If you need assistance of any kind, you are on your own. The government of Saudi Arabia made this clear to all women residing in their country when, late last month, it chose to arrest a 75-year-old widowed woman for being in the company of unrelated males who were simply helping her.

In an embarrassing display of law enforcement, the Saudi government convicted and sentenced the widow to 40 lashes and four months imprisonment for mingling with her late husband's 24-year-old nephew and his friend, after she had asked them to deliver some bread to her house. (Since her husband's death, she often asks others for help. The Saudi government claims that she has sinned.)

As a Muslim who studies, understands and follows true Islamic tenets, such incidents sadden and infuriate me. There is nothing in classical Islamic jurisprudence, nor in the Holy Quran, that would condone this punishment. It simply is not an Islamic injunction.

Saudi Arabia has become infamous for its religious police (known by the Arabic word "mutaween"), who have the power to arrest unrelated men and women caught socializing, seize products regarded as "un-Islamic" and enforce Islamic dress codes and dietary laws. In March 2002, they forcibly barred schoolgirls from escaping a burning school in Mecca because the girls were not wearing head scarves and black coats. Consequently, 15 girls died and 50 were injured.

How sad it is that the country where Islam found its roots now has a justice system that contradicts the very message of Islam. Islam does not give anyone the power to decide who is a sinner. Islam does not give anyone the right to enforce religious practices on others. The Holy Quran openly declares in Chapter 2 verse 257: "There shall be no compulsion in religion."

TRACING THE HISTORY OF MUSLIM PILGRIMAGE | Examiner.com

It was the sacred day, the Prophet announced: "Even as this month is sacred, this land sacred and this day sacred, so has God made the lives, property and honor of every man sacred."

Ahmadiyya Times | Article | Qamar Ahmad

It was the tenth year of the Hijra now. Muslims were the rulers of Arabia. They were one brotherhood. They worshipped one God and followed one Prophet. Past enmities had been forgotten. New friendships had grown fast and firm. The Prophet made known that he would be going to Mecca for Hajj. Men from all over Arabia rushed to Medina. There were to be seen hundreds of tents around the capital. The Prophet left for Mecca with about one hundred thousands Muslims. Next day they put on the Ihram dress - two (white) sheets. They all looked alike, the rich and the poor, the master and the servant. Then all turned to God with these words:

"At Thy service, o Lord, at Thy service! There is no partner with Thee; we are at Thy service. For Thee is all praise, from Thee are all gifts and to Thee are all thanks. We are at Thy service; there is no partner with Thee; we are at Thy service."

On reaching Mecca, the Prophet and the Muslims performed all the rites of Hajj. On the ninth of Zilhajj (12th month of Islamic calendar), the Prophet went to Arafat. Mounted on a camel, he said:

"O ye people, hear my speech. I do not know whether I will be meeting you here after this year. O ye people, your blood and your property and your honor are sacred amongst you until you meet your Lord as is sacred this day, this month, this town. Whoso has with him the trust of the other, he should render it to him. Every kind of interest is forbidden this day. The interest due to Abbas bin Muttabib is remitted today. All the bloodshed in the time of ignorance is forgiven. I forgive first the blood of Ibne Rabia bin Harith bin Abdul Muttalib.

QADIAN, India: Eid-ul-Adha was celebrated with gaiety here in Qadian. The day is observed to mark the sacrifices offered to Almighty Allah by Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail.

Muslims offered sacrifices of animals in a mark of respect and homage, and to commemorate the sacrifices offered by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Prophet Ismail to Allah. The meat from the slaughtered animal was distributed to the poor and the needy. Prophet Ibrahim had offered his son Prophet Ismail to Almighty Allah. Allah had accepted His beloved Prophet's intentions of sacrifice and provided for Prophet Ibrahim a lamb for sacrifice.

At this International Headquarter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community thousands of Muslims today offered prayers at Ahmadiyya Ground in Qadian. Maulvi Mohammad Inam Ghauri, Chief Secretary of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamat in India, led the prayer. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ghauri appealed to all Muslims to follow the right path showed by the Prophet Mohammed and follow the 'sunnah' (tradition) of Prophet Ibrahim and be ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of Allah. After the Eid Khutba (sermon) Muslims raised their hands for prayers. People greeted by hugging and embracing each others.

A large number of Hindu and Sikhs also came into Eidgah to greet Muslims. A special DA'WAT (feast) was prepared by Langar Khana (kitchen) of the Promised Messiah. Special PALAO (salty rice) and ZARDA (sweet yellow rice) were served to the people. Special arrangements were made for women’s to offer Eid Prayers in Qadian.

WORSHIP, PRAYER, SUPPLICATION: SALAT IS THE MOST OUTSTANDING EXPERIENCE FOR ESTABLISHING COMMUNION WITH THE MAKER | Fiji Times Online

Apart from the formal Salat, or the prescribed prayers, the informal prayer or zikr (remembrance of the Creator) can be performed any time as a means of contemplation of the Divine.

Ahmadiyya Times | Articles | Intn'l. Desk
Fiji Times Online | Tahir Hussain Munshi

The inner urge to worship powers superior to humankind appears to have existed in mankind since the deep darkness of ancient times. We know man has been worshipping odd sorts of images which had either been his own creation or the result of his imagination.

Through the ages man had erred in worshipping powerful elements of nature like fire, or heavenly bodies like the sun or the moon and even animals like snakes or lions. He had even carved images out of stones or moulded metal or clay into human or animal shapes in order to satisfy his natural urge towards worship.

Over the passage of time when man's intellectual capacity reached a certain level of maturity and development, God began to send/appoint His Prophets or Messengers who started initiating man to incline mankind back to God. According to Islam, God appointed approximately 124,000 by the time of the advent of the Holy Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). These Messengers had come in every nation, region, tribe and community. They were termed as messengers, prophets, clairvoyants, rishis, munnies etc as per the terminology of the group in which they were raised by God Almighty.

AHMADIYYA MUSLIMS OF GHANA CALL ON GHANAIANS FOR PEACE AND HORMONY | The Ghanaian Times

[T]he objective of the Hajj and Eid was to enable believers to imbibe the moral values of prophets and pious men of God and to impart those values to society in general: Maulvi Muhammad Yusuf Yawson

The Deputy Ameer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Ghana, Maulvi Muhammad Yusuf Yawson, has called on Ghanaians, especially Muslims, to live in harmony with one other.

Consequently, he advised Muslims to endeavour to resolve their differences amicably. Maulvi Yawson gave the admonition yesterday in a sermon to mark their year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration at the mission’s prayer centre at Ashongman, near Accra, where he led the prayers in absence of Maulvi Wahab Adam, the Ameer who is in the United States of America on official duty.

Maulvi Yawson noted that the celebration of Eid-ul-Adha and the performance of the Hajj, foster a sense of equality in the year of God. He emphasised that in the environment where there was no peace and harmony, injustice was perpetuated which often resulted in conflicts and wars.

Maulvi Yawson said the celebration, called for sacrifice and alms giving, especially to the underprivileged, and the poor, to make the celebration meaningful. “If we fail to ensure their right to share in the food, drinks and happiness of the joyous festival then it means we are not fulfilling the requirements of this important celebration”, he said.

Maulvi Yawson said that the objective of the Hajj and Eid was to enable believers to imbibe the moral values of prophets and pious men of God and to impart those values to society in general.
He thanked the government for the immense assistance for this year’s pilgrimage to Mecca.

Maulvi Yawson used the occasion to commend farmers and fishermen ahead of this year’s Farmers’ Day celebration for sustaining the country through food production.

PEACE IS PROMOTED AT AHMADIYYA MUSLIM OUTREACH MEETING | NORTHAMPTON CHRONICLE AND ECHO

The motto 'Love for all, Hatred for none' is one that is very much practiced in the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and that was one of the themes of the day.

Northampton, England, UK (Northampton Chronicle) - The Northampton branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association held the conference at the Caroline Chisholm School, in Wootton Fields, and it was attended by members of the public including invited police officers and Sally Keeble, the Labour MP for NoRthampton North.

Dr Naveed Zafar, president of the Northampton branch, said: "We wanted to promote peace and understanding within the wider community and to show by example that true Muslims do not condone any form of terrorism or aggravated behaviour towards other humans.

"The motto 'Love for all, Hatred for none' is one that is very much practised in the Ahmadiyya community and that was one of the themes of the day."

The conference was introduced by Dr Syed Farooque, president for the Midlands area, and other speakers were Dr Zafar, Mrs Keeble and the main speaker, Imam Ataul Mujeeb Rashad, a respected scholar in Islam and comparative religions.

Dr Zafar spoke briefly, giving an overview of the Ahmadiyya community, its values and ethics.

Mrs Keeble spoke on the importance of peace in the society, and thanked the Ahmadiyya community for addressing the issue.

The main lecture, given by Imam Ataul Mujeeb Rashad, discussed the way to promote peace in society.

He stressed that there should be no compulsion in religion and that any good teaching should be adopted for the benefit of mankind.

Afterwards there was an open question and answer session in which the audience, including councillors and members of other religious organisations, asked about terrorism, women's rights, and politics.

Dr Zafar said: "Feedback after the event was immensely positive.

"Many of the guests said that they had been cynical about whether or not to attend the event and had considered not coming but were incredibly glad that they did, as many of their misapprehensions, and fears in regard to Islam, had been reverted."

Muslims celebrate (Eid-ul-Azha) to commemorate the great sacrifices made by the Prophet Abraham – 500+ expected to gather at Baitul Hameed Mosque in Chino

Eid-ul-Azha marks the completion of the pilgrimage to Mecca by Muslims from around the world. It is obligatory to bring the pilgrimage to a successful termination with the sacrifice of an animal. Like prayer and fasting, the performance of pilgrimage is a mode of worship seeking spiritual rejuvenation and a new beginning consistent with true Islamic teachings.

Eid-ul-Azha is an occasion on which Muslims everywhere are encouraged to make every kind of sacrifice for the spiritual, moral, social, and economic uplift of mankind.

“It is easy to forget the less fortunate” says Dr. Nasim Rehmatullah, Vice President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) USA, “but when you remember the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham you are reminded of those who suffer without food and shelter on a daily basis. It is a time of great understanding for our fellow human beings, and we are encouraged to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with the less fortunate members of not only our family but the community in general.”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) is a dynamic, reformist and fast growing international movement within Islam. Founded in 1889, AMC spans over 190 countries with membership exceeding tens of millions. AMC USA, established in 1921, is the first American-Muslim organization.

AMC is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long-awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas (1835-1908) of Qadian. Ahmadas claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesusas of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammadsa. AMC believes that God sent Ahmadas, like Jesusas, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace.  Ahmadas’s advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival and moderation.  He divested Islam of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings.

IN THE WEST, FAMILY AND MARRIAGE PROTECTED BY A MONOGAMY STICKER

There is a mitigating factor, and that is the sad and pathetic abandoning of the true Islamic teachings by the majority of the world's Muslims.

Ahmadiyya Times | Articles | November 26, 2009
Waseem A. Sayed, Ph.D.| Chino Hills, California

Today we observed Thanksgiving Day in the United States and among the countless blessings I thank God Almighty for, are my faith of Islam, the breath I have just taken, and my family that I return back to at the end of every day.

I read a sticker a while back, on a car, on an old run down car, that said: This car is protected by an alarm sticker; and, then I had an epiphany that answered all my questions vis-Ă -vis; why do the people in the West object to Islamic teachings that protect, support, foster, and strengthen the institutions of marriage and family?  Especially, as I see these institutions dying, being torn to shreds in all Western countries.  The answer is they neither care for, nor value the institution of marriage and family.  The situation here is very much like the car I saw with the sticker.  Family and Marriage are not valued.  So naturally it is considered enough to just put up a sticker.  So in the West this is what we see; like it or not.

Every time someone present the beautiful teachings of Islam with regard to the promotion of chastity and protection and valuing of the family as the basic unit of society, worth making sacrifices and giving up of minor liberties to protect and foster and strengthen, we run into the Monogamy sticker on marriage; where someone will get up and raise the monogamy/polygamy issue and everyone will have a good laugh and they will all go and do what they have been doing.  Be happy that here in the West the family and marriage is protected by the monogamy sticker.

The reality is, they do not value the family or marriage.  Not worth protecting, so just put on the monogamy sticker; otherwise, there are so many wise people among the society and so many of them have full knowledge of the Islamic teachings and know the data from their own societies.

It would be unfair to not say one thing in their defense.  There is a mitigating factor, and that is the sad and pathetic abandoning of the true Islamic teachings by the majority of the world's Muslims.  They disregard women’s due rights, mistreat them and deny their due status in society. They cling vehemently to medieval thoughts about apostasy and killing in the name of God. Many Muslim have turned their mosques into terror bases and refuse to be led into any reform of these false notions.

It is time that we look at the original teachings of Islam which appeal to a sound mind. There is a progressive and reformist community of Muslims who are making the immense effort necessary to effect a reform amongst the Muslims: The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community; visit their main info website: www.alislam.org

THE PROMISED MESSIAH TO PUT END TO WAR

... The practice of attacking the people of other religions prevalent among the Muslims, which they name as Jihad, is not the lawful jihad [as envisaged by shariah]...

Ahmadiyya Times | Excerpts | Jihad
Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, Qadian, India
The Essenes of Islam, v. 2.

"The doctrine of Jihad as understood and propagated by the Muslim divines of this age who are called maulvis is utterly incorrect. It can lead to nothing except that by their forceful preaching they would convert common people into wild beasts and would deprive them of all the good qualities of human beings; and so it has happened.

I know for certain that the burden of the sins of those people who commit murders through ignorance on account of such preachings, and who are unaware of the reason why Islam had to fight battles in its early stages, lies on the necks of these maulvis who go on propagating secretly these dangerous doctrines which result in such grievous loss of life. When these maulvis call on government officials they bow down before them at such an angle as if they are ready to fall into prostration; but when they are among their own ilk they persist in declaring that this country is the House of War and that the employment of the sword for the purpose of the propagation of the faith is a prescribed obligation.

There are few of them who do not adhere to this doctrine. The large majority of them are so committed to this false doctrine which is utterly contrary to the Holy Quran and the teaching of the Holy Prophet, peace be on him, that they condemn anyone who differs with them on this score as Dajjal and proclaim that he may be killed with impunity. PROPHET MUHAMMAD'S CHARTER OF PRIVILAGES TO CHRISTIANS

"Their [Christian's] churches are declared to be protected.  They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants." Prophet Muhammad, Founder of Islam

A copy of the document by which the Prophet Mohammed
gave protection to the monastery (Source: romanvirdi.com)
Ahmadiyya Times | Archives | 628 CE
By Prophet Mohammad Ibn Abdullah | Leader of Arabia
Addressed to the Monks of St. KatherineMonestary

"This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.  Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah!  I hold out against anything that displeases them.

No compulsion is to be on them.  Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries.  No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims’ houses.  Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God’s covenant and disobey His Prophet.

Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.  No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight.  The Muslims are to fight for them.  If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval.  She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray.

Their churches are declared to be protected.  They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.  No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day."

The original letter was taken away in 1517 by the Turkish Sultan Selim I and is now in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul, but the sultan gave the monks a copy of it and sanctioned its terms. From the enormous collection of ancient and modern rolls preserved in the monastery's library, it is clear that the Covenant of the Prophet... was in some way or other renewed, and the privileges of protection and safe-conduct for the monks were upheld. WHY ARE MUSLIMS SO INTOLERANT?

[Any] deplorable Muslim behavior is just that – Muslim behavior, not Islamic behavior.

Ahmadiyya Times | Archives | Article
Reprint: Rochester Muslim Examiner | September 29, 2009
Sardar Anees Ahmad | Waterloo, New York

A gentleman recently informed me that while Muslims request Americans to attempt to understand Islam, they do not return the gesture in kind. He further noted that while the Qur'an declares “there is no compulsion in religion” (2:257) and American-Muslims passionately hold on to the rights the 1st Amendment affords them, there is little, if any, Muslim outcry towards the unjust persecution of non-Muslim minorities in Muslim countries.

Many Muslims, regretably, do exhibit apathy towards non-Muslim’s persecution. As common sense dictates, and the Qur’an (2:192) condemns persecution and declares (22:41) the protection of churches and synagogues a religious duty, I consider silence on the issue deplorable and have actively voiced my dissent on the matter.

I would, however, respectfully disagree that the entire Muslim world suffers from a severe lack of pluralism and tolerance. Sects such as the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) have always spoken out against such injustice – members oftentimes losing their lives in the process. For example, my uncle and grandfather were murdered in Pakistan, in part because they cherished these ideals (their assailants remain free to this day). In addition, AMC has long held a ‘Religious Founders Day’ to encourage religious literacy and dialogue between members of all faiths.

ANTI-BLASPHEMY LAWS ANTI-ISLAM: WHAT AMERICANS MAY NOT KNOW

Rather than blame the West, Muslims should reflect within and reform themselves. A true reformation will be the best retort to those who insult Islam.

Your recent article "Islamic countries seeking treaty to ban blasphemy" (Nov. 20) correctly states that the tenets of freedom of speech directly conflict with anti-blasphemy laws.

What Americans may not know, and Muslims proposing anti-blasphemy laws fail to understand, is that the tenets of Islam directly conflict with anti-blasphemy laws.

The Quran states, "There is no compulsion in religion" (2:256), categorically rejecting any attempts to coerce a person's beliefs by law or threat.

The holy founder of Islam, Muhammad, championed freedom of religion, even for those who vehemently rejected Islam. He and his companions endured 13 years of brutal verbal and physical persecution in Mecca before migrating to Medina, a city some 240 miles away.

Even upon Muhammad's peaceful victory as the de facto ruler of Mecca some 10 years later, he absolutely forbade that any person of any faith should be restricted in their practice, even if that practice should offend Muslims and Islam.

Rather than blame the West, Muslims should reflect within and reform themselves. A true reformation will be the best retort to those who insult Islam.

Anti-blasphemy laws simply reaffirm every critic's point when they question Islam's stability.

THE MULLAH AND THE MUNIR REPORT: ALL THAT WAS PREDICTED HAS COME TRUE

The Munir Inquiry Report: In the beginning of March 1953, widespread disturbances broke out in the Punjab [Pakistan]. It was the first major clash between religious extremism and secularism. The Governor of the Punjab promulgated Ordinance III of 1953 which directed the setting up of a Court for holding a public inquiry into the disturbances. The Munir Inquiry Report is the result of the investigations carried out. It echoed the sentiments of Jinnah, who had repeatedly cautioned the citizens of young Pakistan against theocratic rule by priests with a divine mission. It was a brilliant defense of secularism, against religious extremism and fanaticism.

In 1953, when Pakistan was very young and when Judges still could not be bought, a commission comprising two eminent Justices of the Federal Court submitted a report, fated to be called the Munir Report, that in my opinion should be mandatory reading for everyPakistani and if possible every Muslim all around the world. The Justices who wrote this report were Justice Muhammad Munir and Justice Kiyani. Never again did any judicial officer in Pakistan speak his or her mind so clearly and so eloquently.

The problem started with the Mullahs, most of whom had opposed the creation of Pakistan tooth and nail but now had becomes the ‘chachas’ of Pakistan, started asking the state to declare the Ahmaddiya Muslim sect Kafir. Leading amongst them was that bigoted doctor of reaction, the much admired Maulana Abu Ala Maudoodi. Their target was Ch. Zafrullah Khan, a stalwart of the Pakistan Movement and a great patriot who happened to be an Ahmadi. This was when Maudoodi wrote his famous ‘Ahmadi Problem’. In 18 days that disgusting book sold close to 60 000 copies before the book was banned by the state. This followed a court case in which Maudoodi was tried for treason and sentenced to death, a sentence that was sadly never carried out. Mumtaz Daultana, the then Chief Minister, also had his role in fanning the flames for his own Machiavellian political reasons. He was forced to resign by the Government of Pakistan and that brought his career to a close.

(BBC News) Pakistan is going through a multi-dimensional series of crises and a collapse of public confidence in the state.

Suicide bombers strike almost daily and the economic meltdown just seems to get worse.

But this is rarely apparent in the media, bar a handful of liberal commentators who try and give a more balanced and intellectual understanding by pulling all the problems together.

The explosion in TV channels in Urdu, English and regional languages has bought to the fore large numbers of largely untrained, semi-educated and unworldly TV talk show hosts and journalists who deem it necessary to win viewership at a time of an acute advertising crunch, by being more outrageous and sensational than the next channel.

On any given issue the public barely learns anything new nor is it presented with all sides of the argument.

THE MINARAT IS NOT A POLITICAL SYMBOL. AHMADIYYA MUSLIM JAMA'TA CONDEMNS PROPOSED BAN ON MANARETS IN SWITZERLAND

"It is of surprise and concern that the issue of banning minarets has raised itself so strongly in a country like Switzerland, which has always had a reputation for peace, tolerance and a lack of prejudice." Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at | Press Desk

Ahmadiyya Times | Staff News | November 23, 2009
Source: Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at | Press Desk

London (AMJ Press Desk) - On 29 November 2009 Switzerland will hold a referendum on a proposed constitutional amendment banning the construction of minarets in the country. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat believes that any such prohibition would be a clear example of religious discrimination and would be a direct breach of Switzerland’s obligations under international human rights law.

The referendum is based upon an initial proposal from the Swiss People’s Party (SPP) to amend Article 72 of the Constitution by incorporating the sentence ‘The construction of minarets is forbidden’.

The SPP and its supporters assert that rather than being symbols of religious significance, minarets are ‘symbols of a religious-political claim to power and dominance which threatens the constitutional rights of others.’ This assertion is completely without foundation.

Traditionally the main purpose of a minaret has been to provide a vantage point for the Muslim call to prayer. The call to prayer can be compared to the ringing of bells from a church tower because both signify the time for worship. However out of respect for the local indigenous population, in most Ahmadi mosques this does not occur and the call to prayer is instead performed from inside the mosque to minimise disturbance to non-Muslims. Nonetheless, the minaret continues to play a role as a key architectural feature of the Islamic faith.

SLAUGHTER OF THE SECOND LAMB - BLOODSTAINED PAGES FROM HISTORY

"O’ land of Kabul! You are a witness to the most heinous crime committed on your soil. O’ miserable land! You have been condemned  in the sight of God, as you are the scene of this most atrocious crime." Mirza Ghulan Ahmad of Qadian - 1903

Ahmadiyya Times | Opinion | Imran Jattala
November 22, 2009

It was nearly 130 years ago, when the fate of the ‘land of Kabul' began to be written. That was some twenty-plus years prior to the incidents recounted below, when it was revealed to the founder of the Ahmadiyya Community, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, India in a vision that two ‘lambs’** will be slaughtered from among his people.  It was immediately quite clear to him, he writes, that two innocents will lose their lives for the sake of following his teachings. Who, when and where was to be known afterward.

Fast-forward twenty–two years to 1902 and the first of the two ‘lambs’ was one Moulvi Abdur Rahman of Afghanistan. After having accepted the teachings and claim of Hazrat Ahmad, Moulvi Rahman was imprisoned and investigated. Once proven that he in fact followed a man who had claimed to be the Promised Messiah and, moreover, this ‘messiah’ doesn’t believe in the common notion of jihad, the religious holy war, Moulvi Rahman was sentenced to death and killed by strangulation in the jail.

Quite unique is the story of the second lamb. He was Sayed Abdul Latif, a saintly man of high standings and large following in the province of Khost, Afghanistan. He was a member and a royal advisor in the court of then ruler of Afghanistan, Amir Habibullah Khan. Once Sayed Latif was camped alongside Indo–Afghan border, negotiating on behalf of the ruler of Afghanistan to resolve the border disputes with the British; it was there he came to learn about Hazrat Ahmad and his claims. The aforementioned Moulvi Abdur Rahman was a close associated of Sayed Latif who had provided the in-depth knowledge about the Ahmadiyya beliefs as explained by Hazrat Ahmad. He liked what he had learned and paid a visit to Hazrat Ahmad in Qadian, where he accepted his claim. Just as his acceptance of a non-jihad-waging messiah was not an ordinary event, nor was his steadfastness anything ordinary as he was tortured and stoned to death for refusing to forsake the religious beliefs he had accepted at the hand of Hazrat Ahmad.

The irony of the two slaughters, however, is not in the slaughters themselves. The most extraordinary here are the reasons for which the two lambs came to be slaughtered.

Well, have you heard the word ‘jihad’ again, lately – especially in Afghanistan?  It was about 110 years ago that the Afghan obsession with a wrong notion of ‘jihad’ and insistence on killing of the two innocent men in the name of God which doomed their motherland for ages to come.  Amir Habibullah Khan, the then ruler,  along with his brother, prince Sardar Nasrullah Kahn; and their court and accomplices – religious or otherwise, and the thinking people of that land,  collectively wrote their own fate in blood, and the history of Afghanistan stands witness to this date that the ‘jihad’ has been haunting the condemned land of Afghanistan.  Not a single day of peace has been apportioned to that nation. They wanted jihad and, oh so certainly, they got nothing but jihad -  for ages to come.

TOUGH U.N. CRITIC TAPPED TO REPRESENT U.S. ON HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL - FOXnews.com

Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe has called the U.N. policy and record toward human rights abuses erratic, inhumane and dysfunctional, and has said its inherently flawed charter leaves human rights violators "immunized" from international interference.

This California scholar, tapped to be the first U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Human Rights Council, is a fierce critic of the United Nations' human rights record who some watchdogs hope will roll some heads on the controversial panel boycotted during the Bush administration.

In what would be a drastic shift from current policy, she recommended in her 2006 Ph.D. dissertation that the United Nations condition a country's sovereignty on its human rights record. In other words, she argued that human rights abuses can justify invasion.

U.N. critics are cautiously optimistic she'll bring that hard-nosed attitude to the council and be willing to confront the despots and alleged human rights abusers represented there.

"The council has been awful," Hillel Neuer, director of U.N. Watch in Geneva, told FoxNews.com, saying he hopes the Obama administration doesn't think it's going to seek reform through "consensus" on the panel. "I'm confident that Donahoe, given her background, understands that and will take a vigorous approach to holding abusers to account."

FORT HOOD: FAITH AND FRAGGING | Richmond Juris Publici

In remembering the fallen who lived in constant readiness to sacrifices their lives for our country, let us not forget the heros who stopped this massacre for they too are to be commended for their bravery.

Ahmadiyya Times | Staff news | Article

By Qasim Rashid | Richmond, VA

Every soldier in the US military takes a solemn oath to protect our nation against all attacks, foreign and domestic. On November 5th, we turned on our televisions to find that sadly, our soldiers in Fort Hood, Texas were forced to defend our country from a domestic attack launched by Army Major Nadal Malik Hasan. Far from an anomaly, the term "fragging" is used to describe such tragedies; i.e. when one soldier kills his fellow soldier. In fact, Chris Hedges, author of What Every Person Should Know About War, writes that during the Vietnam War alone there were over 230 documented incidences of fragging, with another 1400 officers killed without explanation.

However, as we mourn the passing of 13 of our departed, we celebrate the soldiers who took action to resolve this crisis to the best of their abilities. In remembering the fallen who lived in constant readiness to sacrifices their lives for our country, let us not forget the heros who stopped this massacre for they too are to be commended for their bravery.

While the present case at Fort Hood has received much publicity, it is not the first incident of fragging of the Iraq/Afghan wars, or even of 2009. In May of this year, Sergeant John M. Russell, a 15 year senior officer of the Army serving his third tour of Iraq, fatally shot five soldiers. That Major Hasan's intentions have been tied to his faith is disappointing. It would be a dire mistake to believe his motivation had anything to do with the peaceful teachings of Islam. By that logic, one could foolishly argue that Sergeant Russell committed his mass murders in the name of Jesus. Rather than pointing the finger at any religion for the actions of a disturbed individual, take the moment and sincerely thank those heroes of Fort Hood, and our military at large, who readily put their lives in harms way so that we can live in safety.

Upon closer inspection, Sergeant Russell and Major Hasan share striking resemblances that have nothing to do with their faith or nationality. Five years ago the University of California, San Diego conducted an intensive study of 64 individuals recognized as mass murderers between 1949 and 1959. The research showed that most of these individuals were loners, all were male, nearly two thirds were heavily involved with weapons and/or war, and their average age was 38.3. Sergeant Russell received orders for mental counseling prior to his attack, he was 44, and certainly heavily involved with weapons and war. Likewise, Major Hasan was a loner in need of mental counseling, he is 39, and certainly heavily involved with weapons and war.

Some would like to believe that religion motivated Major Hasan to commit this atrocity. The facts make clear, however, that this was a textbook case of a mass murderer who tragically was not recognized and stopped in time. Such people are not exclusive to any color, religion, or culture. Rather, they cross all boundaries of the human race without regard to the havoc they wreak as they go. Accordingly, only by joining together as a human race can we emphatically stop such people from advancing their goals. While stopping foreign attacks may well be exclusive to the hands of our leadership, let us ensure our hands our joined together to stop domestic attacks once and for all.

MURDER IS NOT WHAT JIHAD IS. | Finger Lakes Times

Jihad can be waged against an enemy, but who is an enemy? Is every non-Muslim, every American soldier, or every American an enemy? No, nothing could be farther from the truth.

Ahmadiyya Times | Staff news | Articles

Sardar Anees Ahmad | Waterloo, New York

The Fort Hood shootings have sent shockwaves throughout the country. In a letter to The Boston Globe, I urged everyone to support the victims and their families and felt investigating other topics were inappropriate. Discussion has, however, begun over the motives of the culprit, Major Nidal Hassan. So it is with the aim of addressing questions others have raised, fully aware of the situation’s seriousness, that I address allegations of Islam, in particular the philosophy of jihad, playing any role in this tragedy.

As I explained in a 9/19/08 editorial for the Finger Lakes Times, jihad must be understood from its source – how does the Qur’an define jihad and what was Prophet Muhammad’s understanding of jihad? Jihad is derived from the root juhd, meaning to “strive to the utmost in a noble way.” Per the Qur’an’s directives, jihad can be undertaken against oneself, society, or a visible enemy. The jihad against oneself and society is the process of continuously refining one’s character and being a model for society to emulate. Socrates advocated a similar principle when he stated that an examined life is alone worth living.

Jihad can be waged against an enemy, but who is an enemy? Is every non-Muslim, every American soldier, or every American an enemy? No, nothing could be farther from the truth. In the previous article discussing jihad, I cited various Quranic verses and examples of Muhammad’s conduct to prove that Islam in no way defines jihad as extremists do. An enemy against whom jihad can be waged is one who threatens society’s religious freedom. Jihad against an enemy, as the Qur’an (22:40-42) and Muhammad defined it, is waged to establish religious freedom, not to harm innocent people. Far from being an agent of extremism jihad as Islam, not extremists, defines it cannot even be considered a dirty word.

That extremists could even think their warped world-view legitimate and thereafter threaten anyone who disagrees exposes their arrogance and complete disagreement with past prophets’ examples. The Qur’an declares, “whosoever killed a person — unless it be for killing a person or for creating disorder in the land — it shall be as if he had killed all mankind” (5:33). Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the 4th Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, observed that thousands of years of religious history has established, “that the bearers of the divine message are the oppressed, not the oppressors.”

RESEARCHER SAYS TEXT PROVES SHROUD OF TURIN REAL-Times Online

Death certificate is imprinted on the Shroud of Turin, says Vatican scholar

Ahmadiyya Times | Staff News | November 20, 2009
Source: Times Online | Richard Owen | Rome

A Vatican scholar claims to have deciphered the "death certificate" imprinted on the Shroud of Turin, or Holy Shroud, a linen cloth revered by Christians and held by many to bear the image of the crucified Jesus.

Dr Barbara Frale, a researcher in the Vatican secret archives, said "I think I have managed to read the burial certificate of Jesus the Nazarene, or Jesus of Nazareth." She said that she had reconstructed it from fragments of Greek, Hebrew and Latin writing imprinted on the cloth together with the image of the crucified man.

The shroud, which is kept in the royal chapel of Turin Cathedral and is to be put in display next Spring, is regarded by many scholars as a medieval forgery. A 1988 carbon dating of a fragment of the cloth dated it to the Middle Ages.

However Dr Frale, who is to publish her findings in a new book, La Sindone di Gesu Nazareno (The Shroud of Jesus of Nazareth) said that the inscription provided "historical date consistent with the Gospels account". The letters, barely visible to the naked eye, were first spotted during an examination of the shroud in 1978, and others have since come to light.

Some scholars have suggested that the writing is from a reliquary attached to the cloth in medieval times. But Dr Frale said that the text could not have been written by a medieval Christian because it did not refer to Jesus as Christ but as "the Nazarene". This would have been "heretical" in the Middle Ages since it defined Jesus as "only a man" rather than the Son of God.

THE VEIL - ISLAM'S VIEW | Examiner.com

Islam regards chastity as a fundamental moral and social value, thus directing its injunctions against ultra-modern forms of dress.

Ahmadiyya Times | Articles | Sardar Anees Ahmad

The hijab, the veil, the burqa. Whatever name you give, a great portion of the modern world regards it as backward. But before explaining its beauty and practicality in today’s world, the veil must be viewed in its historical context. It may be surprising to some that the institution of the veil is by no means peculiar to Islam. Ancient Assyrian and Persian societies both considered the veil a practice symbolizing purity, particular to the upper class. Judeo-Christian tradition also practiced this noble tradition far before the advent of Islam. We read that when Rebekah saw Prophet Isaac (pbuh), she too covered herself with a veil (Genesis 24:64-65). The New Testament also states that modesty and reverence demanded a woman observe the veil (I Corinthians 11:5-6).

For many centuries Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman women donned a veil entirely covering their hair. In modern times, Christianity has still held on to this practice. It is no coincidence that Mary, the revered mother of Jesus Christ (pbuh) and model female for all time, is always depicted with a head covering. Church-going women commonly observed this practice until the 1960’s. Liturgical, tabernacle, ciborium, chalice, and chancel veils are still observed in many religious ceremonies. The veil is a practice common amongst today’s nuns, and a few Protestant and Eastern Orthodox factions exist who also observe the veil.

He is one person who stands tall when it comes to national peace-building, issues on morality and religion. No wonder he has mediated in several issues which affect the nation and also on behalf of individuals who feel their rights have been trampled upon.

This honourable person is Maulvi Dr Abdul Wahab Adam, Ameer (Head) and Missionary in charge of the Ahmadiyya Mission in Ghana.

The Ameer, who is always dressed in spotless white clothes, with a matching hat, told the Junior Graphic in an interview that as a spiritual leader, his greatest responsibility was to ensure that people did not live in fear but in harmony and in a peaceful environment.

Asked why he loves wearing white clothes, he laughed and jokingly said it was because calico is the cheapest fabric on the market. He, however, explained that he wore white because of the weather, which is usually warm.

One noticeable thing about the Ameer is that he is generally knowledgeable in a lot of subjects and can easily pass for a historian.

When asked who Ahmadis are, the eloquent, soft-spoken Ameer explained that it is a Community of Muslims founded towards the end of the 19th century. The Ahmadis practice the Islam that was taught and practiced by The Holy Prophet Mohammed.

“The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was founded in 1889 but was introduced in Ghana in the 1920s,” he disclosed. Initially, it was headed by foreign missionaries.

Interestingly, Maulvi Dr Abdul Wahab Adam is the first Black African who took charge in 1975 as the spiritual head of the Ghana Mission and has since remained the leader.

THE AHMADIYYA MUSLIM COMMUNITY AND TRAGEDY AT FORD HOOD

Decades before 9/11, we proudly displayed our motto: Love for all, hatred for none.

My heart goes out to the victims of the Fort Hood shooting and their families. Although we await more details of the investigation, most troubling to me was that the alleged shooter, Maj. Nidal Hasan, was a physician and a Muslim.

I am also a physician and a Muslim, belonging to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. More than 100 years ago, our founder [Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, India] condemned any violence in the name of Islam. Decades before 9/11, we proudly displayed our motto: Love for all, hatred for none. We continue to display it. This American-Muslim physician mourns the tragedy at Fort Hood and stands with his nation against the insanity.

INDONESIA'S CONSTITUTIONAL COURT URGED TO OVERTURN DISCRIMINATORY RELIGIOUS LAW

"The government cannot give tickets to heaven." - The law was recently used as a legal base for several government ministries to issue a joint letter banning Ahmadiyya.

Ahmadiyya Times | Staff News | The Jakarta Globe
November 18, 2009 | Camelia Pasandaran

Leading human rights and legal organizations as well as a number of public figures, including former President Abdurrahman Wahid, on Tuesday demanded the Constitutional Court strike down a controversial law adopted in 1965 that they argue is discriminatory and limits religious freedom.

The groups, including the Institute for Human Rights Study and Advocacy (Elsham), Imparsial and the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), argued that the Law on the Prevention of Blasphemy and Abuse of Religion, which carried jail terms of up to five years, was unconstitutional.

The law bans people from publicly espousing or gathering public support in favor of certain religious interpretations, and forces citizens to follow one of six state-sanctioned religions.

Choirul Anam, a lawyer representing the applicants, identified two major faults with Article 1 of the law.

“The first is that it prohibits people from having their own unique perception of religious norms. And secondly, it limits the number of religions [that can be legally followed] in Indonesia,” he said.

Following this article, he said, were five other related articles that stated that certain interpretations of religious teachings were wrong, and gave the president the power to ban any sects or religions and to jail followers.

“The government cannot give tickets to heaven,” Choirul said. “So it’s not its right to ban or to state that certain religious interpretations are wrong.”

Islam means peace through submission to the will of God. I am a Muslim, that is, one who believes in Islam and hence submits himself to the will of God. I believe that all things proceed from God and depend upon him for support and sustenance. I believe He needs no support; He neither begets nor is begotten. He has no partner and no equal.

I believe in God’s angels as the agency through which He communicates with His creatures, and I believe that from time to time that revelations from God have been delivered for the guidance of mankind. I believe in all of God’s prophets—Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Buddha, Krishna—and that the Holy Prophet Muhammad on whom be peace was the last law-bearing prophet.

I believe Jesus did not die upon the cross but was taken down from the cross and revived. Thereafter, he journeyed eastward, reaching to the scattered tribes of Israel and died in Kashmir, where his tomb is still preserved in Srinagar.

THE SIZE AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE WORLD'S MUSLIM POPULATION

China has more Muslims than Syria, while Russia is home to more Muslims than Jordan and Libya combined.

Ahmadiyya Times - Staff News | October 2009
Source: The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life

A comprehensive demographic study of more than 200 countries finds that there are 1.57 billion Muslims of all ages living in the world today, representing 23% of an estimated 2009 world population of 6.8 billion.

While Muslims are found on all five inhabited continents, more than 60% of the global Muslim population is in Asia and about 20% is in the Middle East and North Africa. However, the Middle East-North Africa region has the highest percentage of Muslim-majority countries. Indeed, more than half of the 20 countries and territories1 in that region have populations that are approximately 95% Muslim or greater.

More than 300 million Muslims, or one-fifth of the world's Muslim population, live in countries where Islam is not the majority religion. These minority Muslim populations are often quite large. India, for example, has the third-largest population of Muslims worldwide. China has more Muslims than Syria, while Russia is home to more Muslims than Jordan and Libya combined.

Of the total Muslim population, 10-13% are Shia Muslims and 87-90% are Sunni Muslims. Most Shias (between 68% and 80%) live in just four countries: Iran, Pakistan, India and Iraq.

These are some of the key findings of Mapping the Global Muslim Population: A Report on the Size and Distribution of the World's Muslim Population, a new study by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life. The report offers the most up-to-date and fully sourced estimates of the size and distribution of the worldwide Muslim population, including sectarian identity.

The result of this experiment?  “It didn't work at all” said UO Biologist Joe Thornton, whose team re-ran evolution on this smaller scale.  The basic findings of the study show that evolution cannot backtrack.  Meaning, if we could go back 3 billion years and start all over, the evolution of man would be completely different.  The team of scientists assert that this is because no matter how scientific and logical we try to become in illustrating how and why man evolved, there are still  random “mutations” humans underwent that are inexplicable.

These additional random mutations cannot be understood or predicted because they have nothing to do with our enhancement as a species.  The strict definition of evolution (often used by atheists) is to say that there is no God; rather, human bodies naturally evolved over time due to mutations that made some more dominant than others.  And through survival of the fittest, humans that survived did so due to mutations that made them more powerful.

ON THE QUESTION OF LOYALTY | Examiner.com

A true Muslim does not act in such a way as would be destructive to his country’s or nation’s well being.

"Unto Caesar, Caesar's and unto God, God's" (Matt. 22:21-22)

That was Jesus Christ peace be upon him’s answer to the question of whether true loyalty belongs to God or the Government.

Our founding father’s succeeded in making the domains of religion and nation mutually exclusive with separation of church and state. Yet through history of American Presidential nominees, opposing politicians have made suggestions that the religious affiliations of a nominee will be an obstacle in discharge of his presidential duties. President JFK, as a nominee for the Democratic Party, replied to such finger pointing thus:

“But if the time should ever come--and I do not concede any conflict to be even remotely possible--when my office would require me to either violate my conscience or violate the national interest, then I would resign the office; and I hope any conscientious public servant would do the same.”

September 12, 1960, address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association

We must ask then: whether a Muslim’s loyalties are to his religion or to the country of his citizenship. Is a Muslim only patriotic to a Muslim country? According to Islam, the two affiliations of God and country are not mutually exclusive. To obey God is to obey the law of the land and to obey the law of the land is to obey God. As such Islam is not much different from Christianity.

Muhammad declared: “To love your country is a part of your Faith.” Thus, the question of divided loyalty does not arise. An American Muslim is to be loyal to America, a British Muslim to Britain, and an Iraqi Muslim to Iraq and so forth and so on. Each acts in his own sphere of influence to bring honor and pride to his homeland. Thus on the one hand this injunction promotes mutual love within a nation; and on the other, it fosters a healthy competition among nations.

COVENANTS VIOLATED

Physicians take an oath to do no harm. Soldiers swear to protect their nation. True Muslims who follow the sacred teachings of the Koran love their fellow human beings and profess their faith with peace, not bloodshed.

The alleged Ft. Hood shooter, sadly, violated all three covenants.

May God bless the fallen and wounded and grant strength and resolve to their families.

DO MUSLIMS MAKE GOOD SOLDIERS? | Examiner.com

A Muslim soldier will not find any contradiction between serving his country and serving his God.

For a soldier, the question of divided loyality arises when his religion is put in the balance with his country. In this situation, Islam's stance is simple. It doesn't ask Muslims to choose between one or the other. Rather, it recognizes one's natural love towards his/her home, country and nation. "Love of the homeland is part of one's faith" declared Muhammad peace be upon him. Thus, Islam expects its followers to be loyal to their respective countries without exception. By serving their country sincerely and to the best of their capacity, Muslims serve God as well.

"Officers of Government, assistants, clerks, every one: your obligation to carry out orders or directions issued to you by the Government is a special and a serious one. When Government makes a thing binding, then, there can be no deviation, not even by a hair-breadth. Honest belief implies nothing else. When a person elects to serve a Government, forthwith he enters into a solemn covenant. It is that he will be unsparing, sincere and honest in carrying out the duties and obligations assigned to him. If he breaks the covenant, he makes himself answerable both to Government and to God. He engenders his faith, his relation with God."

Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmud,  al Muslih, June 18, 1953

A faith claiming universality whose adherents come from all nations cannot require otherwise. As such a Muslim soldier will not find any contradiction between serving his country and serving his God. This is true even when faced with Muslim opponents in the battlefield.

"This belief of ours is not of our making. It is a belief taught by God and explained by His Prophet. It is a belief we cannot alter or dilute. If loyalty to their respective Governments results in the killing of Muslims by Muslims, well that is there and, there is nothing more to be said or done. It is but a consequence, an obligation entailed by our religious belief. Principles have priority over persons. Persons may be sacrificed for the sake of principles, not principles for the sake of persons. Such mutual killing will be forgiven by the Wise and Merciful God of the Qur'an. It will be the result of His own teaching, of conditions, over which we have no control."

Mirza Bashir Ahmad, The Question of Divided Loyalty, Some Parallels From History

TO ASSUME HASSAN'S INTENTIONS MOTIVIATED BY ISLAM IS A MISTAKE

I prefer to take the moment and sincerely thank those heroes of Fort Hood who readily put their lives in harm's way so that I and my children can live in safety.

Every soldier in our military takes a solemn oath to protect our nation against attacks, foreign and domestic. Nov. 5, 2009, will be remembered as a day when, sadly, our military was forced to protect our nation from a domestic attack. As we mourn the passing of 13 of our departed, we celebrate the soldiers and civilians who took action to resolve this crisis.

[The assumption] that the accused gunman's intentions have been tied to his faith is disappointing. It would be a dire mistake to believe his motivation had anything to do with the teachings of Islam. Just as Timothy J. McVeigh had nothing to do with Christianity, so does Nidal Malik Hasan have nothing to do with Islam.

Rather than pointing the finger at any religion for the actions of a disturbed individual, I prefer to take the moment and sincerely thank those heroes of Fort Hood who readily put their lives in harm's way so that I and my children can live in safety.
