Morogoro regional commissioner Issa Machibya has called on religious leaders to promote love, unity and harmony among people in efforts to maintain peace in the country.
He was speaking at a meeting organised by the Ahmadiyya community to deliberate on peace and tranquillity. The meeting brought together leaders from different religious groups.
Machibya hailed the organisers for calling the meeting, urging other people to borough a leaf to foster peace, tolerance and love in the country.
He explained that now the society is experiencing great moral decadence, religious solutions would help stop the existing peace and tranquility from disappearing, leading to insecurity and chaos.
Speaking earlier, the Amir and Chief Sheikh of the Community, Tahir Mahmuud Chaudiri, said the forum aimed at giving the participants a chance to discuss about the political situation in the country, taking into account that many countries were experiencing conflicts.
“Each one of us has the duty of promoting peace and unity, especially now when many countries are experiencing unrest. We in Tanzania are lucky, and that is the reason we think we have the duty of protecting what we have,” said the Ahmadiyya leader.
He said religious groups are better placed to promote and foster peace in the world, saying these should also continue providing people with various social services like what his community had been doing, including offering essential services like education, health and water.
Morogoro municipal mayor Amir Nondo said local governments are vested with the task of protecting peace in their respective areas.
“Worship of God does not end in the mosque or in the church alone, it is supposed to be reflected in our daily lives outside the mosque and the churches, where there is peace it is possible to bring forth development,” he emphasized.
Leader of the Sunni Muslims Sheikh Ali Kwembe said it was important to ensure equity and justice in society if peace and tranquility were to be fostered. He said God did not segregate people by their colours, ethnicity or nationality.
“There are those who simply want to plant seeds of hatred and chaos wherever they are, our fellows here have organised something that is aimed to remind us of the importance of maintaining peace, it would be good if other institutions would do the same,” said Sheikh Kwembe.
