A new Muslim mosque has opened in Smyrna, and members want to reach out to others in the community.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Middle Tennessee recently bought the church building and adjacent parking lots formerly owned by Risen Life Church in Smyrna, and services are now being held there.
"The Ahmadiyya Community is spread out," said Lutf Rehman, a Nashville transplant surgeon. "Some live in Murfreesboro and Smyrna, and some in Franklin and Nashville."
He estimates 121 people from the community are part of the Masjid Mahmood (or the Prayer Hall or Mosque Mahmood). The building is located at 301 Maple St. (at Sam Davis Road) in Smyrna.
AHMADIYYA: THE STRUGGLE FOR EQUAL RIGHTS
Freedom of Religion Denied to Ahmadiyya Muslims - Lecture at Davidson College | Reuters
(Ahmadiyya Times) - Reuters - DAVIDSON, N.C., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --
A school that values diversity and provides a range of opportunities for worship, civil debate and teaching, Davidson College will be holding a lecture on AHMADIYYA: THE STRUGGLE FOR EQUAL RIGHTS, which will discuss the Ahmadiyya struggle to practice their religion freely. The lecture will be held: Thursday, October 29th in Chambers 2164 at 7pm.
Ahmadis believe in Mirza Ghulam Ahmad being a prophet that came after Prophet Muhammad, with the qualities of a Prophet like Jesus, but subordinate to Prophet Muhammad. Because Muslims believe that Muhammad was the last and final Prophet, the Ahmadiyya movement has caused great controversy in the Muslim world.
In Pakistan, Ahmadis are declared 'non-Muslims'. Ahmadis are not allowed to preach the Islamic creed publicly and are prohibited from calling their places of worship 'mosques', the term for an Islamic holy temple. They are targeted via protests and acts of violence, such as car bombings or simply being killed at gunpoint. Ahmadis are subject to 'house arrest' and are persecuted and face imprisonment for practicing their religion.
This event will inform the student community of the struggles that minority Muslims face. It will detail human rights abuses never mentioned in the media. It will show a part of the Muslim experience that needs attention.

THE US STATE DEPARTMENT SLAMS PAKISTAN FOR MALTREATMENT OF MINORITIES
“The Ahmadiyya Community Continued to Face Governmental and Societal Discrimination and Legal Bars to the Practice of its Religious Beliefs” - Report
Washington, DC - (Ahmadiyya Times – Staff News)
Washington, DC - (Ahmadiyya Times – Staff News)
The US Department of State issued its 2009 Report on International Religious Freedom which is critical of Pakistan along with a number of other countries that mistreat their religious minorities and encroach on religious freedom in the name of law and public order.
The report highlighted the mistreatment of Ahmadi Muslims along with other religious minorities in Pakistan.
“Societal discrimination against religious minorities was widespread, and societal violence against such groups occurred”, stated the annual report. “Non-governmental actors, including terrorist and extremist groups and individuals, targeted religious congregations.”
During the year, the Government of Pakistan announced “Minorities' Day” on August 11 every year nationwide. “Despite these steps, serious problems remained”, the report noted. “Law enforcement personnel abused religious minorities in custody.”
“The Constitution guarantees the right to establish places of worship and train clergy, but in practice these rights were restricted for Ahmadis...”, the report concluded. “According to media reports, authorities continued to conduct surveillance on Ahmadis and their institutions. Several Ahmadiyya mosques reportedly were closed; others reportedly were desecrated or their construction was stopped.”

Persecution of the Ahmadiyya Community in Pakistan
An Analysis Under International Law and International Relations
Amjad Mahmood Khan, Esq.
(Written for the Human Rights Journal at Harvard Law School)
Before September 11, 2001, the United States characterized the Pakistani government as an unstable regime with a tarnished history of corrupt dictators, military coups, and territorial violence along its borders.[1] Following the September 11 terrorist attacks against the United States, Pakistan became a leading partner in the U.S.-led war on terrorism, thrust into a position to bring “international criminals” to justice and to act as a hero for the “civilized” world.[2] Indeed, one of the lessons of September 11 is that exigencies often spur credulity. United States concerns with Pakistan’s human rights problems lost significance once Pakistan agreed to stand with the United States against terrorism.
Pakistan’s leaders saw September 11 as an opportunity to gain redemption. Blasted in the past for conducting nuclear testing, suspending its Constitution, and breeding Islamists, Pakistan, post–September 11, was in an excellent position to curry favor with its critics by suffocating terrorist networks. Seizing upon this opportunity, President Pervez Musharraf led a fight against militant Islam. This shift in Pakistan’s priorities resulted in a decrease in attention paid to the plight of religious minorities in Pakistan, once a recognized problem of serious international concern.[3] The two issues of human rights and terrorism were treated as unconnected, without the slightest suggestion that addressing the former would be helpful in addressing the latter.

‘Part of our faith’ | Local [Ahmadiyya] Muslim community does its part to Make A Difference at Shalom Center | Kenosha News |
BY DENEEN SMITH

For two decades, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Zion has been volunteering in the soup kitchen at the Shalom Center in Kenosha.
On Saturday, members of the mosque were at it again, cooking chili, cornbread and brownies. It was business as usual for the group, which handles the cooking and serving duties at the center at least once each quarter, but special too. In honor of an annual day of volunteer service sponsored by USA Weekend magazine, the group was under consideration for a National Make a Difference Day Award.
The awards are given each year by the Newman’s Own foundation to 10 organizations that spearhead volunteer activities on Make a Difference Day. Awards, which come along with a $10,000 grant, will be announced in April.
Aaisha Autry of Kenosha leads the volunteer efforts for the Ahmadiyya mosque. Although she and fellow community member Dhiya Bakr said members of the mosque hope to be considered for the award, Saturday’s work for the soup kitchen is part of the group’s normal routine.
“Serving other people is part of our faith,” Autry said. “In our community, everyone is supposed to serve.”

WHERE'S THE LOYALTY? DO AMERICAN MUSLIMS PLACE COUNTRY FIRST OR THEIR FAITH?
Imam Shamshad of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Baitul Hameed Mosque in Chino, California, answers two important questions: Should Americans be afraid of Muslims? Do Muslims place America first or their faith, when it comes to loyalty?
More at TheChinoMosque.Org
Imam Shamshad says Islam mandates obedience to those in authority wherever they live and the Holy Prophet of Islam taught that not just obedience but love of one’s place of residence is a part of a Muslim’s faith. In fact even if Muslims are persecuted and deprived of their freedoms, yet they are not allowed to take the law into their own hands. The Holy Quran says, instead they should leave such places and migrate and assures them that God would take care of them in those new places. In his own life the Holy Prophet followed these injunctions. Instead of creating disorder in Mecca when he ands his followers were denied their basic freedoms he told them to migrate and in the end when his life itself was threatened he left Mecca and migrated 200+ miles to Medina.

Ahmadiyya Baitul Hameed Mosque Grand Re-Opening in Chino, California Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009
“We Are Free to Practice Our Faith in the U.S., Our Message is: Love for All - Hatred for None” – Imam Shamshad
Chino, California (Ahmadiyya Times - Staff News)
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Communities of LA Inland Empire and LA East will be re-opening the Baitul Hameed Mosque in Chino on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Everyone is invited to attend the function which begins at 4:00 pm. Dinner will follow.
Commenting on the occasion, Imam Shamshad said, “For the last twenty years our Mosque has been the symbol of peace and love, and from its pulpit there has been disseminated no other message than the love of God and the service of His creation. In fact, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the leading Islamic organization to categorically reject terrorism in any form. Over a century ago, Ahmad (peace be on him), the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, emphatically declared that an aggressive “jihad by the sword has no place in Islam.”
Imam Shamshad went on to say, “The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to endorse a separation of mosque and state. Over a century ago, Ahmad (peace be on him) taught his followers to protect the sanctity of both religion and government by becoming righteous souls as well as loyal citizens. He cautioned against irrational interpretations of Quranic pronouncements and misapplications of Islamic law. He continually voiced his concerns over protecting the rights of God’s creatures. Today, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community continues to be an advocate for universal human rights and protections for religious and other minorities. It champions the empowerment and education of women. Its members are among the most law-abiding, educated, and engaged Muslims in the world.”

In Thomas Carlyle's assessment of 1840, in the beginning of his famous Lecture: THE HERO AS PROPHET. MAHOMET: ISLAM, we find:
"Our current hypothesis about Mahomet [Mohammad], that he was a scheming Impostor, a Falsehood incarnate, that his religion is a mere mass of quackery and fatuity, begins really to be now untenable to any one. The lies, which well-meaning zeal has heaped round this man, are disgraceful to ourselves only. When Pococke inquired of Grotius, Where the proof was of that story of the pigeon, trained to pick peas from Mahomet's ear, and pass for an angel dictating to him? Grotius answered that there was no proof! It is really time to dismiss all that. The word this man spoke has been the life-guidance now of a hundred and eighty millions of men these twelve hundred years. These hundred and eighty millions were made by God as well as we. A greater number of God's creatures believe in Mahomet's word at this hour, than in any other word whatever. Are we to suppose that it was a miserable piece of spiritual legerdemain, this which so many creatures of the Almighty have lived by and died by? I, for my part, cannot form any such supposition. I will believe most things sooner than that. One would be entirely at a loss what to think of this world at all, if quackery so grew and were sanctioned here."

‘How will they do it?’, you may ask. Well, the ‘140 characters’ is a good give away. Ahmadiyya Press Office has initiated a Twitter account. Anyone convinced of the twitter’s usefulness can ‘follow’ AhmadiyyatIslam on twitter and get the news as it breaks.
“It is an easy and free way for people to get genuine official Jamaat information, rather than the lies and propaganda that are dissipated on a number of anti-Ahmadiyya websites.” said Abid Khan, Press Secretary for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
The measure, approved by the Khalifa of Islam, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Community, will allow the community to get the breaking news instantly.
“To join this service is very easy and quick”, said Abid Kahn. "Any person wishing to join should visit http://www.Twitter.com/AhmadiyyatIslam.”
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has tens of millions of followers and is established in 193 countries of the world. The community has currently built over 15,500 mosques, 510 schools, over 30 hospitals, and has translated the Qur’an in over 118 languages.
The AhmadiyyatIslam account has immediately attracted several hundred ‘followers’. The editors of AhmadiyyaTimes.com have endorsed the live ‘tweet’ window of the AhmadiyyaIslam during the introductory period.

Why I believe in my faith?
TORONTO, ON (October 18, 2009) - It's a reasonable question - "Why I believe in my faith" - which everyone asks to their selves at least once in their lifetime, and there are many answers but, does that answer satisfy us.

Is believing is good enough for creating harmony in our society?
To find this answer, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at is holding an interfaith seminar with the cooperation of St. Gregory Catholic Church on the topic of "Why I believe in my Faith?"

NATIONAL CONVENTION OF MAJLIS ANSARULLAH USA ENDS WITH PLEDGE AND PRAYERS
Special message from Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V conveyed to Majlis Ansarullah USA. “Please implement every instruction given in this message in your lives. May Almighty Allah enable all of us to say ‘Lab’baik’ [here I am]” – Dr. Wajeeh Bajwa
Silver Spring, Maryland - (Ahmadiyya Times) - October 20, 2009
Last Sunday, around midday, some 600 men stood respectfully, with each holding his own hands neatly together in front of him, and repeated in one voice - after one voice - saying, “I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah. He is One, and Has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”
As the newly inaugurated, Ansarullah Hall resonated with the sound of 600 men making a solemn pledge; “I shall endeavor throughout my life for the propagation and consolidation of Ahmadiyyat in Islam, and shall stand guard in defense of the institution of Khilafat”, many men held back tears and several were overcome by emotions, choking over their words.
This was the scene in Silver Spring Maryland, as the 28th Annual Convention of Majlis Ansarullah, USA and their Majlis-e Shura came to a close after three days of prayers, consultations, and breaking bread together.
The men were being led by Dr. Wajeeh Bajwa, National President of the organization in their traditional pledge recitation at the concluding ceremony of this yearly convention.
“This is an awesome undertaking; how can you not be emotional?”, said Rahman Abdul Aleem of Los Angeles who had traveled to Maryland to attend the three-day convention.
Also, included in the program were light activities such as competitions for speeches, Quran recitation, Hadith understanding, and general knowledge. The consistent sprinkling rain kept the attendees indoors and the organizers had to do without some of the outdoor sports activities planned for the members physical uplift.
The convention which had opened two days earlier with the Friday prayers, ended with much accomplished, yet much more to do.
“Oh, no sir, we are not done just yet. We have a large world to reform. People need God, and we are going to show them the way”, remarked one elderly but resolute man who had converted to Ahmadiyya Islam some 27 years ago. “I still remember, it used to be less then 100 gathering for the Ijtema [convention], he said. “Now, see – its 600 and, God willing, it is going to be 6,000, and 600,000, and 6…. “, the resolve visible in that man’s eyes was unmatchable.
The convention started on October 16 at Baitur Rahman Mosque in Silver Spring, Maryland. Dr. Wajeeh Bajwa, National President of the organization, read a written message from Hazrat Khaliftul Masih V, the spiritual head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
“During Ijtema you will meet many new Ansar brothers. Strengthen the bond of brotherhood and greet each other with open arms for everlasting friendship. Recite DAROOD [salutations of peace upon the Holy founder of Islam, Prophet Mohammad] abundantly. Greet by ASSALAM-O ALAIKUM [peace be on you] and not by HI. Practice and spreads the message of; “LOVE FOR ALL, HATRED FOR NONE.”, the message of Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad stated in part.
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih further advised all the members of the association, present or not, reminding them; “Majlis Ansarullah, being an organization of wise and mature members, has solemn and major responsibilities of devising schemes and methods to help complete mission started by Promised Messiah.”
Dr. Ahsanullah Zafar, National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community - USA addressed the gathering and echoed the message of their leader. “You have to go out there and shake hand with people”, he said. “Not just shake hand, sit down with them and have a conversation; get to know them and invite them to one God. Because, God knows – this world needs God - more so now, then ever before. Lead them to one God.” After his concluding address, Dr. Zafar led the membership in silent prayers.
The convention takes place every year and it is always more exciting then the one held the previous year. On the last day, the next year’s convention was already on the minds of the organizers. “Let me know what we need to improve in our projector system,” said Munawar Saqib, a senior organizer with many years of experience under his belt. “I will await your email”, he was quite persistent about starting the next year’s plan. No wonder he is good at what he does.

Letters: Why were we attacked? - Jakarta Post - Opinion

I refer to an article titled "Govt urged to respect Ahmadiyah rights," (The Jakarta Post, Oct. 15)
Members of the Ahmadiyah Muslim community are renowned the world over for their attachment to peace. They are taught from their infancy that they must be law-abiding citizens wherever they live.
Their motto is: Love for all, hatred for none. They believe that faith devoid of good deeds and service of God's creation is no faith at all. Thus, in every society where the Ahmadis are found, the communities bear witness to their unblemished record of peaceful, law-abiding nature and can show the good works they are involved in to improve the lives of the poor and disadvantaged members of the society.
The Ahmadiyah Muslim community has now built some 15,500 mosques, more than 500 schools and 30 hospitals. It has translated the Holy Koran into 60 languages.
It propagates the true teachings of Islam and the message of peace and tolerance through a twenty-four-hour satellite television channel (MTA), the Internet - www.alislam.org - and print (Islam International Publications).
It has been at the forefront of disaster relief in the United States and worldwide through an independent charitable organization, Humanity First - www.humanityfirst.org. It is strange that such totally harmless, indeed beneficial members of society should be made the target of attacks.
What is more alarming is that the authorities should need to be convinced to step in to protect them, and apprehend and punish those who commit crimes against such law-abiding citizens.
If the government will not protect law-abiding, peace-loving citizens, who will they protect? Those who take the law into their own hands? That would be the beginning of a very sad chapter in the history of Indonesia indeed!

L. A. County Fair – Preaching Islam – Muslim Visitors’ Reaction
Now in its 87th year, the Fair is the largest county fair in the U.S. Fair attendance has topped one million people in every year but one since 1948.
The inaugural 'Los Angeles County Fair', now known as the L.A. County Fair, opened Oct. 17, 1922, and ran for five days through October 21, 1922, in a former beet field in Pomona, California. Highlights of the Fair’s first year were harness racing, chariot races and an airplane wing-walking exhibition.
This year, I had the good fortune to man the booth and met some very interesting people and was able to participate in a few lively discussions and make some very good friends.
But by far the most indelible impression was left by two non-Ahmadi Muslims who stopped by one day to tell me, ‘you Ahmadis should stop deceiving people.’
So what is the truth and can we make sense of the underlying question: Can there be Prophets after Prophet Muhammad (saw)?
Before answering the question, one has to understand that there are all sorts of misunderstandings rampant among the Muslims with regard to what a Prophet is. So let us first spend a little time understanding the concept of Prophethood.
Prophets are appointed by God to reform people and guide them to their Creator. Through their high moral and spiritual conduct they bring people back on to the path of righteousness. What distinguishes prophets from saints and other men of religion is the great frequency with which God communicates with them and the fact that God gives them intimation of future events.
A Muslim believes that prophets appeared in all nations of the world. This includes the Israelite prophets mentioned in the Holy Qur’an and the Bible as well as the prophets of other religions such as Zoroaster (as), Krishna (as), Ram Chandar (as) and Buddha (as).
Prophethood commenced with Prophet Adam (as) and reached its pinnacle with Prophet Muhammad (saw). According to Islam no new independent prophet can now appear. However, Prophethood as an institution has not ceased. According to the Holy Qur’an and other Islamic sources there can be a prophet after Prophet Muhammad (saw) provided he follows the Shariah of Muhammad (saw) and is completely subordinate to him – since Islam is the perfect religion. This perfection of teachings, however, is no guarantee of the perfection of mankind and Muslims – like followers of all religions before them – were also to drift away from the true teachings of their religion after the demise of Prophet Muhammad (saw). There would therefore be a need for a prophet to rekindle the true teachings and spirit of Islam and put mankind back to the ‘right path’ and this is why according to Islam only law-bearing prophethood ended with Prophet Muhammad (saw) but not prophethood itself.
This interpretation is not only in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and hadith, but is also in conformity with the understanding of great Muslim scholars.
Man, being the chief of Allah’s creation, has been created with a grand purpose and with a free will. Being blessed with wisdom, he can sift right from wrong and truth from falsehood. All of man’s faculties and energies should be used to achieve this supreme objective.
To help him, God, out of His benevolence raises prophets, who serve as models. These prophets have been appearing amongst all people and in all parts of the world. Their mission has always been to guide mankind to its Creator through their example and model.
The guidance revealed through each prophet was designed to cater for the specific needs of the time and location; hence they were essentially temporary in nature. With the advancement and maturity of mankind God sent advanced and matured teachings suitable to their time. God’s guidance for human race commenced through Prophet Adam (as) and reached its zenith through Prophet Muhammad (saw).
Islam has a unique claim to be the perfect religion as the Holy Qur'an states:
This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as religion. (Ch.5: V.4)
This makes clear that there cannot be any new laws or new religion. However this does not preclude the need for guides or prophets to remind people of the true meaning of Islam. History shows that every time a prophet came he set people on the path to God, but after a prophet’s demise people drifted away from that path. So a prophet who would bring people back to the true Islam is not just possible but would be a blessing for Muslims.
Types of Prophets
According to history that there are mainly two types of prophets that have appeared – those that were law-bearing (ie they brought a new or a revised code of religious law) and those that upheld and served the prevailing religious law. The first category therefore includes prophets such as Adam (as), Moses (as) and the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), and the second category includes prophets such as Aaron (as) David (as) and Jesus (as). (Holy Qur’an with English Translation and Short Commentary by Malik Ghulam Farid, Islam International Publications, 2002. Ch2:V.254, footnote 314)
The first type of prophethood came to a close with the demise of the Holy Prophet (saw) of Islam. With regards to the second type of prophethood the Ahmadi Muslim philosophy is that the door to this type of prophethood remains open. After Prophet Muhammad (saw) a new prophet may appear but only if he adheres to and revives the law of the Holy Prophet (saw) as contained in the Holy Qur’an. This is because the Law brought by Prophet Muhammad (saw) has reached the pinnacle of religious evolution and reviving an earlier and less complete religion than Islam would take mankind backwards rather than forwards. In other words, a prophet can only appear if he is in total submission and conformity to the Holy Prophet (saw).
Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as), the Promised Messiah and Mahdi and founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, claimed to be such a follower and subordinate of the Holy Prophet (saw).
Commenting on his divinely appointed title of prophet, the Promised Messiah (as) writes,
‘This status and title has been bestowed on me only because I am a true follower and servant of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.’(Tajalliyat-i-Ilahiya, pg24-25).
Evidence from the Holy Qur’an
According to the Qur’an prophethood is a bounty from God and is the blessed path upon which Muslims seek to be guided. In fact in the very first chapter of the Holy Qur’an, God enjoins Muslims to offer the prayer,
Guide us in the right path – The path of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy blessings. (Ch.1:Vs.6-7)
This path of God’s ‘blessings’ is described in detail in Chapter Al-Nisa, which states,
And whoso obeys Allah and this Messenger of His shall be among those on whom Allah has bestowed His blessings, namely, the Prophets, the Truthful, the Martyrs and the Righteous. (Ch.4:V.70)
Practicing Muslims repeat Surah Fatihah at least 32 times in any given 24 hour period. In each repetition they implore Allah to raise prophets from amongst the faithful (i.e. those on whom Allah bestows His blessings). If prophethood had ceased to exist, then the requirement that they pray for such a blessing would appear to be futile.
In another chapter of the Holy Qur’an, Allah addresses humanity and says:
O children of Adam! If Messengers come to you from among yourselves, rehearsing My Signs unto you, then whoso shall fear God and do good deeds, on them shall come no fear nor shall they grieve. (Ch.7:V.36)
This verse clearly keeps open the possibility of prophets appearing in this world.
The Holy Prophet as ‘Khataman Nabiyyeen’
The Holy Qur'an states,
Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and Khataman Nabiyyeen; and Allah has full knowledge of all things. (Ch.33:V.41)
The word Khatam means ‘seal’ and thus the expression ‘Khataman Nabiyyeen’ means ‘The Seal of the Prophets’. The verse, therefore, states that Muhammad (saw) is not the father of any man but is the Messenger of Allah and is the Seal of the Prophets.
The essential meaning of the word ‘Khatam’ in Arabic usage has always been applied to mean not ‘last in time’ but ‘the ultimate in status’. Hence, Prophet Muhammad (saw) was the final authority on prophethood, or to put it simply no prophet can appear after him who will support or revive any religion other than the religion brought by Prophet Muhammad (saw). Anything to the contrary would effectively seek to ‘break his seal’ on the issue of prophethood. This is because the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (saw) has incorporated the beauties of all religions and completed the religious teachings to perfection.
It is well known, however, that the purpose of a seal is not to close a statement but it is far more important than that. Its true purpose is to certify something as correct. That is why a seal is affixed to a document at its top or at its end. Its purpose is to certify the veracity and accuracy of the contents of the document. Hence the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) testifies to the truth of all the prophets. This is why one of the Articles of Faith in Islam is to believe in all the prophets.
After the truce of Hudaybiyyah, when the Holy Prophet (saw) decided to address letters to the rulers and chiefs of surrounding territories inviting them to accept Islam, he was told that rulers and chiefs do not attach any significance to a communication addressed to them unless it bears the seal of the writer. Thereupon, the Holy Prophet (saw) had a seal prepared which was thereafter used for the attestation and certification of documents sent by him. (Bokhari and Muslim)
Given that the purpose of a seal is attestation and certification, the interpretation of the verse in question would be that although the Holy Prophet (saw) had no male issue, yet being the Messenger of Allah, he is the spiritual progenitor of his followers. He is, therefore, not without issue but has a large spiritual progeny. It is added that he is not merely a Divine Messenger but is also the Seal of the Prophets, that is to say, he is not only the progenitor of the body of the believers but he is also the spiritual progenitor of the prophets and messengers. Thus, he occupies the exalted position which mandates that no prophet or messenger can appear after him unless he bears with him the confirmatory seal of the Holy Prophet (saw).
If this verse is construed as meaning that the Holy Prophet (saw), was absolutely the last prophet, the verse becomes meaningless. In that case its meaning would be: 'Muhammad had no son but he is the last prophet.' In Arabic idiom, the word 'but' which has been used here, is employed for the purpose of introducing an explanation in modification of what has gone before, or for the purpose of clearing a doubt which the previous statement might raise. The use of the word 'but' in this verse entails that it should be followed by a statement which modifies or clarifies that which has gone before. To take this verse to mean that Muhammad (saw) was the last prophet would render it meaningless, for it would then amount to a statement that though the Holy Prophet (saw) has no issue, no prophet will come after him either (thus depriving him of any physical or spiritual progeny). This interpretation does not do justice to the exalted and revered status of the Holy Prophet (saw).
Evidence from Hadith
Further evidence supporting the possibility of prophets appearing after Prophet Muhammad (saw) can be found in the Hadith.
On the demise of his son, the Holy Prophet (saw), said,
‘If Ibrahim had lived he would have been a prophet’ (Sunan Ibn e Maja, vol. 1, p.474).
The Prophet’s son died after the verse noting the Holy Prophet (saw) as ‘Khataman Nabiyyeen’ had been revealed. Yet despite the prior existence of this verse, the Holy Prophet (saw) categorically and publicly stated that if his son Ibrahim had lived he would have been a prophet. This tells us that the Holy Prophet (saw) could not have understood the verse about ‘Khataman Nabiyyeen’ meaning that he was the last prophet.
In another hadith, the Holy Prophet (saw) is reported to have said,
‘Abu Bakr is the most exalted person in my Ummah, except the advent of a prophet in future.’ (Al Jami ul Saghir, vol. 1, p.6).
From these Ahadith, it is clear that prophethood did not cease with the Holy Prophet (saw).
It is worth also noting some Ahadith that to the lay reader may suggest that prophethood ended with Prophet Muhammad (saw). However when studied further it is clear that they cannot mean support the claim that prophethood has ceased altogether.
One of these hadith is:
‘There is no prophet after me’ (Bukhari)
However, the Holy Prophet (saw) here is referring to a law-bearing prophet. This interpretation is further clarified and confirmed by Hadhrat Ayesha (ra), wife of the Holy Prophet (saw), who said,
‘O ye people you should say that the Holy Prophet is Khataman Nabiyyeen, but do not say that there will be no prophet after him.’ (Durr e Manthoor, vol. 5, p.386).
Another hadith often quoted is:
‘I am the last prophet.’ (Sunan Nassai, Vol. 2, p.35).
Here the Holy Prophet (saw) is again referring to law-bearing prophets. This is clear from the full version of the hadith which states,
‘I am the last of the prophets and my mosque is the last mosque.’ (Sunan Nassai, vol. 2, p.35).
By juxtaposing prophet with mosque, the Holy Prophet (saw) is simply implying that there will be no prophet like him just as there will be no mosque equal in glory or piety to his mosque. Future prophets, just as mosques, will be a reflection of his prophethood and mosque.
Opinion of earlier Muslim scholars
Some of the most distinguished Muslim scholars further support the view that there can be prophets after Prophet Muhammad (saw). Maulana Rumi, known as one of the greatest mystic poets of Islam says,
‘When a master excels all others in his art, don’t you use the word “khatam” to convey the idea that he has excelled all others on his domain?’ (Mathnawi, vol. 6, p.8, 1917ed.)
And the greatest of Muslim Sufis, Hadhrat Ibn-e-Arabi, has also clearly explained,
‘The prophethood that came to an end with the advent of the Holy Prophet (saw) was the law-bearing prophethood and not the institution of prophethood itself. No law can now cancel the Law of the Holy Prophet (saw) or add anything to it. This indeed is the meaning of the saying of the Holy Prophet (saw), “La nabiyya ba ‘di” (there will be no prophet after me). This only indicates that there shall be no such prophet who shall introduce a different Shariah. But whenever there appears a prophet, he will follow my Shariah.’ (Futuhat-e-Makkiyyah, vol. 2, p.3)
Conclusion
Therefore, the Holy Qur’an, the Ahadith and religious history all support the view that prophethood has not ceased. Prophets can still appear but the only proviso is that they are Muslims and their advent reaffirms the divinely bestowed title of the Holy Prophet (saw) as ‘Khataman Nabiyyeen’.
I began with mention of the two non-Ahmadi Muslims who visited the Ahmadiyya booth at the L A Country Fair. I pray this elucidation of the question they raised reaches them somehow and I pray that Allah blesses all Muslims with the understanding of the true teachings of Islam. Aameen!

Comenting on a post in the on line edition of USA Today, screen name 'wsayed' [Waseem sayed, PhD.] writes:
"....[T]here is a lot that Muslim leaders can learn from President Obama, I fear the only way Muslims can make any progress is by undergoing a total reformation of their mindset.
I recently wrote to another website that is highly critical of Muslims and regularly attacks Islam, the Holy Quran and the Holy Founder of Islam saying that there is a ray of light in the emergence of a group amongst Muslims that is making the herculean effort to bring about such a reformation.
That Community, alas such is the lot of reformers throughout history, is considered heretic by the vast majority of Muslims. Yet those who care to look, do agree with my comment - among them, the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Stephen Harper. At a recent inauguration of one of this Community's mosques in Calgary, Alberta, Canada he risked the ire of a million strong Muslim population of Canada by commending them for presenting the benevolent face of Islam. Here is what he said from the PM's own website:
Prime Minister Harper attends opening of Baitun Nur Ahmadiyya mosque
5 July 2008
Calgary, Alberta
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today participated in the unveiling of Canada̢۪s largest mosque complex. The spectacular 48,000-square-foot Baitun Nur mosque was inaugurated by the head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim community, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad.
Prime Minister Harper said the mosque symbolized how the relatively small Canadian Ahmadiyya community, most of whom are recent immigrants from Central and South Asia, has prospered and flourished in Canada's pluralistic society. "Ahmadis are renowned for their devotion to peace, universal brotherhood and submission to the will of God – the core principles of true Islam," said Prime Minister Harper. "They are also renowned for working together to serve the greater good through social, health and education initiatives, as well as mosque projects like this one. And wherever they live in the world, Ahmadis are renowned for participating in the larger community and peacefully co-existing with people of all faiths, languages and cultures"
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to His Holiness the Kalipha as a champion of peace and religious freedom."We especially applaud the Kalipha for denouncing those who pervert faith by claiming it as a justification for violence," Prime Minister Harper said, noting that many Ahmadis who endured persecution in their homelands have found religious freedom in Canada.
"Calgarians, Albertans and Canadians will see the moderate, benevolent face of Islam in this mosque and the people who worship here," the Prime Minister said. "They will see your love for Canada and your patriotism, and they will see that just as Ahmadis have embraced Canada, Canada has embraced you."

Govt urged to respect Ahmadiyah rights | The Jakarta Post
Thu, 10/15/2009 11:59 AM | National
A series of attacks on followers of the Ahmadiyah religious sect has once again drawn criticism, with an expert in religion and democracy urging the government to exercise its authority when there are violations of human rights.
Alfred C. Stepan, director of the Center for the Study of Democracy, Toleration and Religion at Columbia University in New York, said on the sidelines of a discussion held Tuesday that while the government must keep a principal distance, the separation did not mean the state should never get involved in religious matters.

MISCHIEF IN DISGUISE: “THE JEWEL OF MEDINA” - A NOVEL BY SHERRY JONES
A Glaring Example of Anti-Islamic Propaganda Disguised Under the Banners of Freedom of Speech and Artistic Freedom
By Atika Sadeeqa
Upland, CA - USA
I have been reading the controversy swirling around “The Jewel of Medina” and its author all over the world. This book represents a twisted history disguised as artistic freedom. I would like to make few observations about it.
Author writes this novel to entertain and inform about Hazrat Aisha Bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The storyline is a rehash of the infamous charge against the Holy Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) about marrying Hazrat Aisha at her young age. The author did not provide the essential context to the reader about the historic period and the religion of Islam. The heroin of the story begins her tale as a premature female. Author would have better served its readers if her heroin would have been allowed to grow. Perhaps, author could have traveled to a Muslim country to assimilate and infuse the essence of that society in her story and, better yet, she could have read the unbiased accounts of Non-Muslim writers to better inform her readers.
According to some reliable Islamic sources, such as Sayed Suleiman Nadvi, a well known historian on the subject, Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was 12-16 years old at the time of her marriage.
Hazrat Khadija (may Allah be please with her), the first wife wife of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was more than 10 years older than him and the companionship period was 25 years. Most other wives’ companionship was from 3 months to 9 years. Hazrat Aisah (may Allah be pleased with her) was the only wife of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) who was a virgin at the time of her marriage while others were either widows or divorcees. Several western thinkers and experts on the subjects are in agreement that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him)’s marriages were out of sympathy and protection and to break the customs of the society of that period. In this regard Mr. T. Arnold, Pringle Kennedy, Michael H. Hart, Sir Thomas Carlyle, J. H. Denison, S. P. Scott, Alphonse de Lamartine, Sir William Muir are few of them that the author could have studied.
This literary description of historical fiction represents only the ideology of the author. Firstly, does the so called award winner author or her supporters take the responsibility of the accuracy of the facts mentioned in the book? The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), his family, friends and other personalities are portrayed in opposite manners to what is recorded in the Holy Quran and the Islamic history. It is a complete distortion of the reality. Our Holy Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) and his family could not be a shred of what has been portrayed in the book. And, on historical grounds alone the book portrayals are totally inaccurate.
Secondly, can the attempt by Ahmadiyya Muslim Community to condemn the book be considered an act of censorship, infringing on the artistic rights of such authors? While it can be granted that artistic freedom ought to be maintained, that is not the issue involved here. Freedom refers to the responsible exercise of the choices within clear boundaries, not an open license where anything goes. That is why I denounce the novel, “The Jewel of Medina” and urge its removal from the bookstores and libraries.
Islam means peace. This means no bloodshed, violence, death threats, terrorism or destroying the peace of the world in any form. We should behave in a civilized manner. I would like to persuade people of all faiths that if peace is to be achieved, we must respect all Prophets of God and our fellow men. The Holy Quran lays the foundation of peace by declaring that all prophets of all religions of the world are sinless. The Holy Quran further declares: “There shall be no compulsion in faith- Call into the way of thy Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and reason with them in the way that is best.”
A little over a decades ago, “Last Temptation” exhibited irresponsible behavior of the same nature on the part of filmmakers. We all know that freedom of speech does not mean that anyone has a right to humiliate and disgrace anyone by using indecent and filthy language, or by insinuating vulgarities. The defamation of someone’s characters is no definition for freedom of speech.
Not only in the Muslim world, but a large number of sensible people from all over the world are deeply offended by this book. If this trend continues in our society, we are heading for the eventual loss of all freedom.
As we know most prophets reported in the Bible had multiple wives, some times dozens, and even hundreds. The Old Testament states that Prophet David had 100 wives and Solomon had 700 wives along with 300 concubines. The word concubine is very much familiar to our 21st century progressive woman, which has echoed from Buckingham Palace to White House in recent years. On the other hand, Islam is the first religion to restrict the numbers of wives that the previous faiths could or did not want to control.
The Holy Quran establishes the complete innocence and moral integrity of all biblical prophets. Where as the both New and Old Testaments, leaves those to our assumptions and imaginations.
Hazrat Maryam (Mary, the mother of Christ), may Allah bestow peace on her, was 12 years of age, or according to some scholars 14, at the age of her marriage. Holy Quran stated: "..when the angels said, O Mary, ‘Allah gives thee glad tidings of a son through ‘a Word from Him; his name shall be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honored in this world and in the next, and of those who are granted nearness to God.” (Ch. 3:46)
The author’s lack of interest and enthusiasm for her heroin is not an excuse to misinform the reader and distort the history. A reader can not depend upon her fluid style of writing and imagery as a substitute for historical accuracy.
